We offer several tours which are perfect if you are passing through the area and want to get out and explore just for the day.

Our Petersburg Creek Sea Kayak Trip is a four hour, guided kayaking trip up scenic Petersburg Creek. All of the sea kayak gear is provided, including stable double sea kayaks (great for learning!), PFDs, paddles, spray skirts, and we also bring along a snack for you. The sea kayak trip leaves directly from Petersburg's South Harbor and we kayak through the harbor on our way up the creek. No sea kayaking experience is necessary, and children are welcome!

Paddling in LeConte Glacier Bay We also offer two guided day paddling tours in LeConte Glacier Bay located on Alaska's Inside Passage. Both start and finish with a motorboat charter to get you to and from the fjord area. The LeConte Day Paddle Tour is a 10-hour kayak trip for adventuress people who want to spend the day paddling in the iceberg filled fjoird. The LeConte Day Explorer Tour is a 6 hour tour which includes a powerboat tour of the bay and a two hour paddle among the icebergs. Prior sea kayaking experience is helpful but not required. Please note that it is not always possible due to weather and iceberg conditions to get close to the face of the glacier

Our Rainforest Hike/LeConte Glacier Fjord Day
Tour
is an all day, guided tour that allows you to experience two very diverse areas near Petersburg. In the morning, you will hike on a boardwalk trail through the Tongass National Forest, learning about plants, birds, and the ecology of the muskeg found throughout Alaska's Inside Passage. Your hike will take you out to the ocean where you will be met by a powerboat which will take you to LeConte Glacier Fjord. In the fjord, you will travel in and out of an array of blue ice bergs, past thundering waterfalls and steep granite walls, and get a view of LeConte Glacier the southernmost tidewater glacier in North America! You'll return to Petersburg on the motorboat.

The Frederick Sound Day Explorer Tour is a full day using a comfortable powerboat to check out the Sound with the option of paddling at one or more location. Frederick Sound is a great place to see Marine Mammals from the powerboat and paddle some of its protected coves and bays. Possible paddle locations would be the Brothers Islands, Cape Fanshaw, Farragut Bay, Thomas Bay, Pinta Point. Destinations worked out with guests. Limited to 4 guests

Our Powerboat
We use a 24 foot HewesCraft Ocean Pro with a 250hp motor on our day trips.
It has a very comfortable fully enclosed/ heated cabin with all the safety gear
and is equipped with a hydra phone. Its open bow makes landing at beaches
very easy and it can carry several kayaks on the roof.

Tongass Kayak has been
operating kayak trips in
Alaska for over
20 years.

The Base Camp Alaska Kayaking Adventures are designed to offer you the highest quality wilderness experience, while also providing you a very comfortable home base, prepared before your arrival. Your only responsibilities are to kayak, relax, and enjoy your adventure!

The days are spent kayaking out around the base camps, exploring areas of breathtaking scenery and observing wildlife in their natural habitats of Alaska's Inside Passage, all at a relaxed and leisurely pace.

In the evenings, we proudly serve a variety of Petersburg's finest wild Alaska seafood around a crackling fire, protected from the elements by large tarps that cover the kitchen and dining areas. Both camps have large natural history libraries for your use.

At night, you will retire to a spacious dome tent for a comfortable night's rest. Our base camps are located at Big Creek on Frederick Sound, and at Indian Point in LeConte Glacier Bay. Transportation to and from the camps is by either floatplane or large power boat.

We offer Three-Night Alaska Kayaking Base Camp Tours at LeConte Glacier Bay and Big Creek on Frederick Sound. We also offer a week-long Glaciers & Whales Package that goes to both camps for three nights and a shorter version, the Glaciers & Whales Express Package, offering one night at Big Creek and two nights at LeConte Glacier Bay.

Our Explorer Alaska Kayaking Adventures offer the thrill and challenge of being entirely self-contained withinthe sea kayaks, but with the luxury of setting up camp only two or three times throughout the week! Prior sea kayak experience is not necessary; our experienced guides will teach you the kayaking skills that you'll need for this wilderness adventure, including the art of packing a sea kayak and camp set-up.
We typically kayak 4-6 hours a day, which allows us to fully explore and experience the area. Don't worry, though--the sea kayaks are large enough to carry lots of fresh food, including fresh , local wild Alaska seafood. We even bring a folding oven for baking to satisfy those with a sweet tooth! Our tents are spacious and top-of-the-line, and we hang up tent tarps and group tarps to help us stay dry.

Since our kayaks will be loaded, tour participants must be age 12 or older, and all children must be accompanied by an adult.

We offer Our Explorer Alaska Kayaking Adventures to LeConte Glacier Bay and the Stikine River.
The sea kayaking opportunities around Petersburg and in Alaska's Inside Passage are endless! LeConte Glacier Bay with its tidewater glacier, the Stikine River, Thomas Bay, Frederick Sound, Kuiu Island and Duncan Canal are all areas that offer outstanding kayaking opportunities for people seeking an Alaskan adventure.

The camping is excellent and there are more than 20 U.S. Forest Service Cabins available for rent that make perfect base camps for kayakers.

Our double sea kayaks are fiberglass Eddyline Whisper XL's (21 feet long with a 32" beam) with three bulkheaded hatches for safety and plenty of storage space.

The fiberglass single sea kayaks are Wind Dancers (17 feet long with 23.5" beam) with bulkheaded hatches. The plastic singles are Prijon Kodiaks (17 feet long with a 24" beam) and a Prijon Baracuda (16.9 feet long with a 21" beam), both with bulkhead hatches.

Sea kayak rentals include Mid Swift 230 cm breakdown paddle, a spare paddle, nylon spray skirt, Extrasport PFD, hand pump and sponge. We do have additional sea kayaking equipment and some camping equipment for rent if you
need it.

Your safety is a major concern for us! Alaska is a wonderful place to kayak but it is not always very forgiving. The water is extremely cold, the tides can be up to 20 feet and help is not available around every corner. So in order to ensure you a safe and enjoyable trip, we require our sea kayak renters to have previous experience. Also, prior to your departure we will go over the equipment, and talk about general safety, route planning and local hazards.
A complete itinerary for your kayak trip must be filed with our office before the sea kayaks will be released. Our sea kayak rental rates are as follows: • Double sea kayaks $65 per day • Single sea kayaks $55 per day. There is a 3 day minimum. Rentals for 7 days or more receive a 20% discount on the total rental charge. If you plan to rent sea kayaks, please contact Scott Roberge regarding availability. You can visit our links page to learn more about our area and cabin reservations, as well as our General Information and FAQs.

We also provide a powerboat charter service to drop/pick you up at any location. Drop us a note at info@tongasskayak.com or call (907)772-4600.The Petersburg area offers outstanding sea kayaking opportunities. From an iceberg-filled fjord in LeConte Bay to the Keku Islands, this remote area has hundreds of miles of shoreline to explore. Visit the Tongass National Forest web site to learn more.
I have to write and tell you how great this trip was. Much, much better than I expected. Nothing was too rushed, too slow or too strenuous! Thanks - New Jersey
