An Experienced Tour Operator: About Tongass Kayak Adventures

Hi, my name is Scott Roberge and I own Tongass Kayak Adventures. My company specializes in small group adventures in the heart of the breathtaking Tongass National Forest. I’ve been called an “old timer” in the sea kayak guiding world, though I prefer the term “experienced.”

In fact, when it comes to finding a tour operator in Petersburg, AK, you’ll discover that my many years in the business have made me uniquely familiar with this beautiful region. Let me put my years of experience to work for you: explore Alaska’s Inside Passage with me as your guide. You’ll enjoy a one-of-a-kind outdoors experience that will stay with you for a lifetime.

Your Guide for Stunning Iceberg Viewing and More

I began organizing kayaking, skiing, and hiking trips in 1976, back when I was a broke college student who loved to get outdoors. Leading tours to great areas around the West Coast, I refined and strengthened my guiding skills.

My life changed forever when I came to Petersburg, Alaska in the summer of 1981. I paddled an old Grumman canoe all over Southeast Alaska and got hooked! In 1985, I started a kayak tour company and spent the next twelve years teaching thousands of people to sea kayak in the waters of Mexico, the Pacific Northwest, and Alaska's Inside Passage. In those days we lived out of our van with a trailer of sea kayaks behind. We had lots of fun, but spending only three months in Alaska just wasn’t enough. Today, I only organize trips from Petersburg, Alaska, my home.

My business has changed over the years. I used to offer week-long tours but many people don’t have that much time these days. I also simplified and downsized my company several years ago, so instead of me in an office organizing tours and other guides, I lead each tour myself.

I have become very involved with Humpback whales. These days, I’m also a volunteer on the board of the Petersburg Marine Mammal Center which is part of the North Pacific Marine Animal Response Network. Our organization supports researchers who come to study the Humpbacks.

As you’ve probably gathered if you’ve read this far, I’m passionate about this gorgeous, special part of the world. The landscapes, waterways, and wildlife have so much to offer. I want to share with you the natural beauty of this place that has come to mean so much to me. There’s nowhere else quite like it. Join me on a tour and you’ll see and understand why.
